Columnist gave reader hope with his words

Dear Mr. Backstrom,

Thank you for writing your profound and articulate commentary (Nov. 5, Kent Reporter, “It takes courage to be truly free”) about your political journey.

Your article made me think, how often political prejudice enters into our judgment of each other. Amazing how the label “Democrat” or “Republican” triggers such charged emotion.

Even from those who know and love us best. In the current atmosphere of renewed hope in America perhaps we can realize that to be truly free and united means to stop focusing on what divides us.

A house divided will not stand.

We already have and enjoy many freedoms. The question remains will Americans really embrace the hard work and courage that lies ahead that it will take to truly live out those freedoms.

Will we enter a time when the tearing each other down is laid aside for a fresh look at one another? If so, then we may experience a time where not just our country is built up, but her people too.

Your piece was refreshing and well said.. Thank you for staying the course and being an example to many who relate to you.

You released hope to our area through your words.
