Recruit Academy 17 keeps nearly 70 firefighters scrambling each week during the 21-week session at the South King County Fire Training Consortium in Kent.

Whether it’s climbing an 100-foot ladder, donning their self-contained breathing apparatus or reloading hoses, there’s plenty of activity for the 17 recruit firefighters with Kent-based Puget Sound Fire and 50 other recruits from surrounding agencies.

“Service means to stand next to others in their time of need,” said recruit firefighter Joanna Mckittrick in a Puget Sound Fire Facebook post. “To serve is to have compassion, and to put others before yourself.”

The academy began in August and concludes early next year.

Recruits train on ladder carries and fire hose deployment. They also receive classroom training on emergency vehicle incident prevention , structural search and rescue and fire ground survival skills.

The South King County Fire Training Consortium is at 20811 84th Ave. S.
