Firefighters battle blaze for seven hours; cause under investigation

Firefighters battled a blaze at a former elementary school in SeaTac for seven hours before extinguishing the two-alarm fire.

Puget Sound Fire, King County Fire District #2, Tukwila Fire and South King Fire and Rescue responded to the fire early in the morning Wedensday, Feb. 16 in the 1400 block of South 200th Street, according to a Puget Sound Fire media release. The fire was at the former Maywood Elementary School, part of Highline Public Schools. The building, just south of Sea-Tac Airport, was vacant.

When the first engine company arrived, they encountered a significant amount of fire from the windows of the former elementary school. Firefighters initially attacked the fire from the exterior of the building and then continued with an interior fire attack.

As fire conditions worsened, firefighters were pulled out of the structure and transitioned to a defensive fire attack, according to the media release. Furthermore, a second alarm was dispatched which brought an additional ladder truck, an aid car and three additional fire engines to the scene.

There were no injuries to firefighters. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Explorers provided rehab services to the firefighters. Kent-based Puget Sound Fire serves the city of SeaTac.

In total there were seven fire engines, three ladder trucks, two aid cars, one Medic One unit and one Zone 3 Explorer unit on scene.
