Sun, nature, animals: Tamil community celebrates Pongal in Renton

See photos from the festival

After a change of venue from the Don Persson Renton Senior Activity Center to the Renton Community Center, the festival of Pongal commenced on Saturday, Jan. 20.

From 1:30 to 5 p.m., local members of the Tamil community gathered for traditional music, dance, art and food. Pongal is a celebration where thanks is given to the sun, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that bestow a bountiful harvest.

The festival opened with a music medley and dance by Tamil Kids, and then Pattimandram, which is described as a unique debate show, followed by performances by the UW Youth Band and games.
