City of Kent celebrates grand opening of renovated West Fenwick Park

$3.1 million project features new interactive playground, artificial turf field and main grass field

Kent city leaders, residents and partners who helped with the $3.16 million renovation of West Fenwick Park gathered to celebrate the official grand opening of the new features.

“Since the gates came down in June, West Fenwick Park has quickly become the ‘place to be’ – our hope is that this park becomes an iconic feature of our city and a popular destination for both locals and visitors for many years to come,” according to a City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department statement.

More than a decade of planning went into the renovation that includes an interactive playground based on the chutes and ladders board game, a new artificial turf field and a new main grass field.

Among those who attended the Aug. 11 event were Mayor Dana Ralph, Kent City Council President Toni Troutner, City Councilmembers Zandria Michaud, Brenda Fincher, Les Thomas and Satwinder Kaur, and Park Commission Co-Chairs Scott Taylor and Richard Minutoli.

The city paid for the West Fenwick project through its capital budget, funded mainly by the city’s business and occupation tax and the real estate excise tax (on sales of real estate). The city also was awarded two King County Youth and Amateur sports grants for this project, worth a total of $275,000.

West Fenwick Park is at 3808 S. Reith Road, just east of Interstate 5.
