What’s so positive about a big loss?

Thanks to the Kent Reporter, I had the best laugh that I have had in years. The front page headline read, "ShoWare Center posts lowest annual loss yet" (Feb. 5).

Wow, I thought to myself, “Just think, we the taxpayers only lost a quarter-of-a-million dollars last year.” That’s putting a positive spin toward a negative result.

I guess the Reporter needed to present the loss in a positive way for us overtaxed taxpayers. Maybe so that we would not feel depressed pertaining to the continuing deficits that the ShoWare Center presents each year.

Does a loss of “only” $254,530 mean our taxes will go down next year? Don’t bet on it. At this rate by the year 2030, the ShoWare Center might even produce positive earnings. Assuming we don’t have to come up with more tax monies to pay for a building that’s falling apart from overuse or age.

Taxpayers think positive. The Reporter did.

Like Monte Fugate’s letter to the paper in the same issue of the Kent Reporter stated, “When does it all end?”
