What should the voters believe?

It looks like the other shoe is finally dropping in Kent. After months of assuring us that the budget was fine and sales tax revenues would be adequate to fill the budget shortages in the city, the administration is now about to lay off dozens of employees.

It looks like the other shoe is finally dropping in Kent. After months of assuring us that the budget was fine and sales tax revenues would be adequate to fill the budget shortages in the city, the administration is now about to lay off dozens of employees.

In a recent written communication from the city’s chief administrative Officer, it was stated: “…. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, department directors will meet and deliver layoff or work reduction notices to affected employees. Layoffs will be effective Nov. 30.”

It appears that many more will likely lose their jobs, either later this year or early next year, as is apparent from the same communication, when the CAO wrote:

“…..I want to remind you that we are reviewing the budget in two phases. The first which is noted above is determined by forecasts that have been made on how we will end the year, 2009. In the event that the revenues are not met either due to a weakening economy or impacts with the flood, administration and council will review these impacts and make additional adjustments. The reason for the early layoff notices noted above is that we have all determined that this is the minimum expectation in reductions, therefore we are prepared to make these cuts this month. …..”

He also indicated that the city’s management team is meeting with union leadership and employee services to discuss these layoffs, and how they affect “bumping” and union contracts.

Why are these layoffs necessary? I can only see two possibilities – either city hall didn’t know their budget was unsustainable, or they did know and elected not to tell us. Neither option is acceptable.

It appears that recent articles provided by Denton Hanford and Jim Berrios were VERY accurate, and the City now has to face up to the TRUTH. I don’t know how our city will survive if we elect the current mayor to another four-year term.
