Surcharges would help the state

In response to Sen. Keiser's newsletter I suggested to her the lawmakers set up a surcharge on the state's portion of our property tax. I paid $3,400 in tax for my home.

The state got $630. A 30 percent surtax would be about $185. I would pay that so we could get back to running the state. It is foolproof; when times get better they can give it back to us in tax relief. The charge would tap into the huge “reserve” funds maintained by our angelic mortgage companies. Homeowners could opt to send in the sur-tax rather than adjust the monthly payments. Once set up this could take the hills and valleys from the state’s income. Free riders aside, we have to pay our bills and take care of our folks who can’t do for themselves. What it must not do is allow lawmakers to spend and spend. Cost control is an urgent thing for wages and programs.

I note that out-of-state travel was curtailed, it should not be. There should never ever be out-of-state travel that is not justified and necessary. Tell ’em, folks, tell ’em: pay our bills and pay us back.
