Protect people, enforce no parking on sidewalks

I would like to add a fourth point to Mr. Matt McNeilly’s list (letter to the editor, Kent Reporter, May 22) of our traffic laws to be enforced: parking. Not only would some money go into the city coffers, but the safety of our residents would be protected.

Every day I see numerous vehicles parked on the sidewalks in our residential neighborhoods, where our children should be able to walk safely to school without walking into the street to walk around a vehicle completely blocking the sidewalk. In my neighborhood there are families walking their dogs, parents pushing strollers, elderly couples getting their daily exercise, and kids riding their bikes to the park.

I’ve seen the police drive by these violators daily with no action taken. The sidewalk “parkers” have licenses to drive and should know the laws. Somehow, perhaps because the curbs are rounded, they think it’s OK to pull up on the sidewalk, instead of following the laws prohibiting cars from the pedestrian walkway.

Let’s protect our kids and neighbors by enforcing the laws that prohibit parking on the sidewalks. The side effect of a little parking enforcement revenue would be OK too.
