On behalf of the Kent Senior Activity Center, I would like to express gratitude to the City of Kent Arts Commission and the following co-sponsors who made the fifth annual Jazz and Art Showcase a tremendous success on June 28:

Aegis Living, Chateau & Valley Center, Northwest Prime Time, Regency & Auburn, Regency & Renton, SHAG Housing, Talbot Healthcare, The Weatherly inn, Wesley Homes and Stafford Suites who provided 350 complimentary boxed dinners and desserts.

The showcase featured local talent, including James Coates, Whitney Monge and Brandon Willis. Headline entertainers were jazz pianist Richard Dean and jazz saxophonist Darren Motamedy.

The Kent Valley Artists provided the free art show and demonstrations.

In addition, the annual event, which received a 2011 Outstanding Special Events Award by the National Council on Aging, served as a fundraiser for the Kent Parks Deli & Café Lunch program.

The Jazz and Art Showcase also helped advertise the subsequent educational event, “Boomers and Aging Parents 101,” a new program to help families get conversations started about resources for baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) and their aging parents. The free info booths on Social Security and Veterans Benefits were available last Friday.

Free info booths on Medicare, Medicaid, Medigap and Long Term Care Insurance will be open at the Kent Senior Activity Center from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, July 27. Lunch is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (only $6) and the free mini workshops will be hosted from 12:15 to 1 p.m.

Special thanks to co-sponsor Fountain Court Senior Living for subsidizing 50 lunch tickets for both days.

Thanks to all community co-sponsors who have supported the Kent Senior Activity Center programs, events and services over the years.

Additional opportunities are available for upcoming programs. For more information, please call 253-856-5164.
