Drivers, beware

Your Aug. 29 article, "Kent school traffic cameras catch nearly 5,000 speeding drivers", implies that the traffic cameras operate only when the speed limit is 20 mph. That is not the case.

Your Aug. 29 article, “Kent school traffic cameras catch nearly 5,000 speeding drivers”, implies that the traffic cameras operate only when the speed limit is 20 mph. That is not the case.

I walked past Neely-O’Brien Elementary School on 64th Avenue South at about 7:20 this morning. The 20-mile-per-hour speed limit was not yet in effect. The lights that notify drivers of when the limit is in effect were not flashing and there were no children present. I saw the school traffic camera flash as a car drove by.

Kent drivers should be aware that either the traffic cameras are being used when children are not present or that they are malfunctioning.
