Board needs to address problems

The departure of Edward Lee Vargas from the Kent School District presents one radical opportunity for the school board to address a very real problem.

The departure of Edward Lee Vargas from the Kent School District presents one radical opportunity for the school board to address a very real problem. In searching for a new superintendent, I would urge them to either go back to the previous pay level before their embarrassing move to raise an already ridiculously high level.

Additionally, it is past time to cut way back on the foolish perquisites. The KSD board of directors has a golden opportunity to lead all of Kent in saying enough is enough.

It appalls me that they have no problem arrogantly throwing tax dollars at the feet of the superintendent, while the district fights tooth and nail to keep the wages of their para-educators at poverty level, for instance. I admit to being a proud and retired para-educator.

Another compelling example of the board’s poor stewardship is this year’s introduction of a new math curricula in the elementary level. Instead of phasing it in over time, they set it up for all grades. True to form, they also introduced it with a minimum of training.

Show me a true focus on the kids.
