Mayor Suzette Cooke’s recent message in the 2017 resident’s guide compelled me to write.
I have made Kent my home for 10 years. I am 58 years old and have been voting since President Ford was in office. Our new president’s words and actions against immigrants are in opposition to my personal values and the diverse reality that is our Kent.
The majority of the people who provide value, meaning and purpose to my life are immigrants. For example: two of my three doctors. Pharmacists, librarians, bus drivers, grocery workers. I could go on, but you know what I’m saying.
The current (un)reality of hate, prejudice and hostile acts must stop now. Michelle Obama was ridiculed for saying she was finally proud to be an American. Well, for the first time, I am ashamed to be an American.
