Kent Police arrested a 39-year-old Kent man Saturday for investigation of first-degree assault in connection with a shooting of another man in the leg Sept. 19 at a Scenic Hill home.

Detectives decided to arrest the man after interviews in the hospital with the man who was shot, a 38-year-old Kent resident, said Lisa Price, Kent Police spokeswoman, in a phone interview Tuesday.

The shooting occurred at about 3:48 a.m. Sept. 19 at a home, owned by the shooter, in the 1300 block of East Maple Street, just east of downtown.

Police initially had trouble trying to sort out the details of the shooting as each man told different versions of the incident.

The man who was shot told police the two had been out drinking together and they went to the man’s home on Scenic Hill. After they walked into the home, he said the homeowner went to a bedroom and came out with a shotgun and shot him in the leg in the living room.

The man who was shot then fled the home to a nearby house where a neighbor called 911 to report the shooting.

The homeowner told police that it was a home invasion and the man was a burglar that he did not know. He told officers he went to a bedroom to grab a shotgun and shot the man in the leg.

“Detectives were able to put a case together and sort out facts that did not match before,” Price said.

Police sent the case to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which is expected to file charges against the man on Wednesday. The man is in custody at the Kent city jail with bail set at $200,000.

Paramedics took the man who was shot to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to be treated for a single gunshot wound to the leg. The man is expected to be released from the hospital later this week, Price said. Two shots were fired during the incident.
