Kent group forming to seek city tax freeze for senior citizens |Update

Residents interested in organizing a city of Kent tax freeze for senior citizens can attend a meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the Golden Steer Steak ‘n Rib House, 23826 104th Ave. SE.

“Too many older residents are taxed to the extent where they have to make lifestyle changes — even losing their homes as they are forced into poverty,” said Dale Brantner, a Kent resident who organized the gathering in an effort to get others to help with a movement to aid senior citizens when it comes to paying taxes.

At what age a tax freeze should kick in has yet to be determined, Brantner said.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP to 206-753-9973.

The Kent City Council increased property taxes last year beyond the 1 percent limit by using banked property tax capacity.

In addition to the city, Kent taxpayers saw increases after the state raised property taxes this year to help pay for schools and Sound Transit began a property tax and increased sales taxes and vehicle licensing fees after a voters approved a ST3 measure in 2016 to expand mass transit. Voters also approved two Kent School District measures this year.
