Sound Transit will host two community meetings about the impact of the Federal Way light rail extension on the South 272nd Street area on the city borders of Kent and Federal Way.

The meetings are an opportunity to hear about construction progress and will include time for a question-and-answer period with staff. Both meetings will cover the same content and will be held at different times of days to accommodate differing schedules, according to Sound Transit.

The location for both meetings is the Woodmont Library meeting room, 26809 Pacific Highway S., Des Moines.

• Meeting one: Wednesday, Feb. 28, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

• Meeting two: Thursday, March 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Federal Way Link Extension project extends light rail from Angle Lake Station in the city of SeaTac through Kent and Des Moines to the Federal Way Transit Center. The 7.8-mile extension includes three stations at Kent/Des Moines near Highline College, South 272nd Street in Kent and the Federal Way Transit Center. All three stations add parking for a total of 3,200 spaces along the route.

The extension is scheduled to open in 2026. The project had a 2024 opening but that was changed due to several delays, including soil conditions in Kent. The soil conditions refers to a section along the proposed route in Kent where unstable soil conditions near wetlands forced a redesign to include a long-span bridge as part of the route.
