One man was injured, one dog died, another dog saved and about 20 people were displaced in a Kent apartment fire Friday morning, Jan. 5.

Firefighters arrived at about 7:12 a.m. to The BLVD Apartments in the 2100 block of South 272nd Street on the West Hill, according to Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak.

“They found heavy black smoke coming from a third-floor unit,” Pawlak said. “They upgraded the alarm to a commercial response to bring in additional firefighters.”

Firefighters went into rescue mode, Pawlak said. They entered the building, extinguished the fire and located one occupant. That resident was brought outside by firefighters and paramedics provided lifesaving treatment on the man before he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Pawlak said he did not have an age for the man. A hospital spokesperson has not yet responded to a Kent Reporter email for a condition report about the man.

Firefighters extinguished the fire in approximately 30 minutes, Pawlak said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters rescued one dog and King County Medic One administered oxygen to the dog, Pawlak said. The dog was taken to an animal shelter. A second dog was found deceased in the apartment.

No firefighters were injured. Federal Way-based South King Fire & Rescue assisted Puget Sound Fire on the call.

“We are working with Red Cross on emergency housing needs for approximately 20 residents,” Pawlak said.
