A man reportedly fired shots from a rifle at a security worker who had just showed up for his job at the Phoenix Court Apartments, 23913 111th Place SE, in Kent.

Officers were dispatched at about 11:25 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 to reports of gunfire near the apartment complex office, according to Kent Police.

When officers arrived, they contacted the reporting party and the security worker, a U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons employee who had just showed up to work off-duty security at the apartment complex. He was driving a Bureau of Prisons vehicle and wearing a Bureau of Prisons uniform.

The federal employee heard fireworks and exited his vehicle to observe a male standing nearby who turned and pointed a rifle at him, according to police. The suspect fired an unknown amount of rounds at the security worker before running off. The security worker was able to take cover and was not hit by the gunfire.

After firing shots, the man with the rifle turned and fled on foot while apparently putting the rifle in a carry case. The security worker pursued the suspect on foot and re-engaged him. The suspect removed the rifle from the case and again pointed it at the security worker, but did not fire any shots. The suspect then fled again on foot from the location.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter and requested assistance from King County Sheriff’s Office Guardian 1 helicopter. An Auburn Police K-9 unit responded to assist as well as Renton Police with an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Officers continued to search the area for the suspect, but did not locate him.
