What first struck me while reading Mr. Beckley’s opinion on homosexual marriage (May 23 Kent Reporter) was that while he pretends to be open and accepting on the one hand, he has no problem with labels for those who might disagree. Names like “narrow-minded,” “melon-head,” “right-wing echo chamber,” “bigot,” and “closed-minded homophobe” make it seem that his logic won’t support his point so he must demean those who might disagree.

He may or may not have valid points, but his stature as a writer and his message got lost in his venom.

This is a very divisive and incendiary topic. Agree or disagree with the premise, I don’t think it belongs in a paper like the Kent Reporter. It’s been said that just because you can say something, doesn’t mean you should.

This opinion and it’s tone would be better fodder for the Times or, before going defunct, the P.I.

We enjoy the KR and look forward to local news twice a week. You do a good job at that. But will the editor please remember that unlike a subscription paper, you are not invited onto our private property.

Whether you enter a private, gated community or walk down the street throwing the paper on the porch, people get the KR whether they want it or not.

You can imagine a number of types of publications that people do not want thrown on their front porches unless they have asked for them.

Please show us more respect than Mr. Beckley shows those who disagree with him. Keep the Kent Reporter a quality local newspaper and leave the name calling and opinionated anger to the subscription papers.
