Members of the East Hill Steering Committee are trying to keep their early momentum going and have scheduled their next meeting for April 22.

Following two earlier meetings, the East Hill group was delayed as members of the Kent Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the East Hill Steering Committee, were busy with other Chamber events.

But with the annual President’s Gala and the state’s International Trade Week in the past, East Hill is once again moving to the fore.

The group of nearly 20 business owners and residents from the East Hill area is looking to change the public perception of their neighborhood and encourage shoppers to spend their money on the top of the hill instead of leaving town.

The group is trying to gather East Hill property owners involved to help clean-up efforts, with the help of the Kent Police’s Weed and Seed program.

The goal, according to Harpreet Gill, who owns Punjab Sweets on East Hill and has been a leading force in the creation of the group, is to encourage more collaboration between landlords, business owners and residents.

“We want to get the city involved,” Gill said. “We don’t have as much clout as everyone brings together.”

Guests at the next meeting of the group will include Ben Wolters and Kurt Hanson from the city’s Economic Development Department as well as representatives from the Neighborhoods Association and the Police Department’s Weed and Seed program.

The next meeting of the East Hill Steering committee is scheduled for 4 p.m. April 22 at the John L. Scott Real Estate office, 13026 SE Kent-Kangley Rd.
