Kent Police hit the streets for a good cause Friday.

A group of nine officers participated in the Special Olympics’ Flame of Hope Torch Run, following a two-motorcycle escort and dashing a southerly 5.1 miles down East Valley Highway, through downtown Kent and into Auburn on a 75-degree early afternoon.

Kent Police Det. Melanie Robinson, shown below, accepted the torch from Renton officers at the corner of South 196th Street and 84th Avenue South. The officers then proceeded south on 84th Avenue South, following Central Avenue to Auburn, where they passed the torch on to its police officers.

Nearly 300 law enforcement officers from throughout Washington are participating in the Flame of Hope Torch relay. Officers will carry the torch and present the Flame of Hope at the Special Olympics Washington opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. Friday on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Nearly 1,800 Special Olympics Washington athletes will compete in the three-day Summer Games, participating in many events, including soccer, track & field, swimming (at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way), cycling and powerlifting.
