A 19-year-old Kent man suffered serious injuries after his late model Ford Mustang reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed collided with a pickup truck at about 10:29 p.m. Thursday at Southeast 240th Street and 102nd Avenue Southeast in front of the Fred Meyer store.

“Alcohol and speed are believed to have contributed to the collision though investigators will be waiting for the results of blood tests before rendering a finding,” said Kent Police Assistant Chief Pat Lowery in an email.

Witnesses told police that the Mustang was traveling east on Southeast 240th Street at a very high rate of speed, entered into the intersection in front of the store, possibly while facing a steady red light.

As the driver of the Mustang passed through the intersection he collided with the side of a pickup truck that was leaving the store. The impact caused the truck to roll over in the street.

The Mustang driver was seriously injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Lowery said. The pickup driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Valley Medical Center in Renton. No details were available about the hometown and age of the pickup driver.
