Ten Kent Fire Department and two paramedic units were dispatched at 11:07 a.m. Saturday to a confirmed residential fire on Kent’s East Hill.

Upon their arrival they found the home with flames showing on at least two sides and heavy smoke showing from much of the structure. The home suffered significant damage to both interior and exterior surfaces. Property and contents losses are not available at this time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Though the home was occupied at the time, the fire got a large head start on fire crews.

The fire is believed to have started in the unoccupied first floor of the split-entry home, thus allowing it to go undetected for some period of time. Residents were able to escape with only minor injuries to one person. The injured person was treated on the scene by fire crews and then transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

The fire rendered the home uninhabitable, leaving three adults and three children homeless. Red Cross volunteers were able to assist the family to find temporary quarters and to provide for other needs such as clothing and toiletries.

The Kent Fire Department reminds residents to periodically check that their smoke detectors are in good working order and to make sure that there are smoke detectors in all bedrooms.
