Kent neighborhoods can register for this year’s National Night Out, which is Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Residents are the first line of defense against crime. National Night Out is a great opportunity for neighbors to come together, meet each other while learning more about their community, according to a Kent Police media release.

In 2011, more than 37 million people from 15,325 communities spread throughout the United States, Canada, as well as U.S. military bases worldwide participated in National Night Out.

Kent ranked 13th overall last year for the number of National Night Out events in our new population category competing with cities like Orlando, Fla., and St. Paul, Minn.

Apartment communities, businesses, and neighborhoods are encouraged to participate. Events can include potlucks, barbecues, dessert socials, or any other event that brings a community together.

The goal is to heighten awareness to crime, strengthen neighborhood spirit, while sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back. The Kent Police Department will visit events along with other city staff including Mayor Suzette Cooke, City Council members, the Regional Fire Authority, Parks and Public Works staff.

Representatives from Washington State government will join city staff members, and Target, a national sponsor of National Night Out, will also be represented. Local events run between 5-9 p.m.

“National Night Out continues to grow every year in Kent,” said Police Chief Ken Thomas. “Last year, a record 110 neighborhood events were held across the city. This is a great way to get to know neighbors and gives the police department a chance to say thanks for being an extra set of eyes and ears.”
