A 25-year-old Kent man was sentenced Monday to 16 1/2 years in prison for the murder last year of a 75-year-old Federal Way woman.

Joseph Njonge, 25, worked as a nursing assistant the Garden Terrace Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence in Federal Way. Relatives found the body of Jane Britt dead in March 2008 in the trunk of her car parked at that nursing home where she had visited her husband. Britt had been beaten and strangled.

King County Superior Court Judge Laura Gene Middaugh sentenced Njonge to 16 1/2 years, about 20 months less than the maximum for second-degree murder. A jury on June 17 found Njonge guilty of second-degree murder of Britt.

Prosecutors alleged in the charging papers that DNA testing showed skin cells from Njonge were found under Britt’s fingernails. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office discovered defensive wounds on Britt’s hands that indicated she had struggled with her attacker.

Federal Way Police arrested Njonge in April 2008 at the nursing home. Police found a Costco card belonging to Britt’s husband in Njonge’s wallet.
