{"id":8760,"date":"2009-09-30T15:28:50","date_gmt":"2009-09-30T22:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiken.wpengine.com\/news\/king-county-councilmembers-praise-congressional-delegates-for-flood-assistance\/"},"modified":"2016-10-22T22:20:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-23T05:20:25","slug":"king-county-councilmembers-praise-congressional-delegates-for-flood-assistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/king-county-councilmembers-praise-congressional-delegates-for-flood-assistance\/","title":{"rendered":"King County Councilmembers praise Congressional delegates for flood assistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingcounty.gov\/council.aspx\">Metropolitan King County<\/a> Councilmembers Dow Constantine and Julia Patterson on Sept. 30 praised the efforts of Western Washington\u2019s Congressional delegation in securing a $3.45 million allocation by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to purchase 400,000 sandbags and other flood-fighting materials for use in the Green River Valley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked Senator Murray for help in getting increased federal support and she delivered,\u201d said Constantine, chair of the County Council. \u201cThis short-term funding is important for the preparation effort, but my goal is to see a permanent end to the flooding threat to Green River Valley residents and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe support of our Congressional representatives is crucial to getting the dam repaired and protecting the Green River Valley, which is a key economic engine for our region,\u201d said Patterson, whose Fifth Council District includes many of the potentially affected communities. \u201cIn the meantime, people living in the potential flood zone need to make personal plans to protect their homes and families in the event of flooding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Senator Patty Murray organized her colleagues in making a Sept. 16 joint request for additional funding to Lieutenant General Robert Van Antwerp. The letter was also signed by Sen. Maria Cantwell, and U.S. Reps. Adam Smith, Norm Dicks, Jim McDermott, and Dave Reichert. The letter also requested that the Corps \u201cmove quickly on the design and engineering of a permanent repair\u201d to the Howard Hanson Dam, which has been damaged by recent storms.
