Owners of 1991 to 1998 Honda Accords and Civics can pick up The Club, a steering wheel anti-theft device, for free 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the Kent Police station, 220 Fourth Ave. S., as long as supplies last.

A recent spike of thefts of older Honda passenger cars caused the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority to offer the devices for free at Kent and other local police agencies, according to a Kent Police media release.

The state-created authority receives grants to help pay for programs to prevent auto theft.

To obtain a free Club device, you must provide proof that you own a 1991 through 1998 Honda passenger car and that you live within the service area of one of the local participating police agencies.

“Vehicle thefts continue to plague our region and are usually preventable,” said Kent Police Lt. John Pagel, commander of the South King–North Pierce County regional auto theft task force. “We hope that this offer will increase public awareness and improve their ability to prevent auto theft. Using devices such as The Club is recommended as a proven deterrent to auto thieves.”

Other participating police agencies in the giveaway program include Covington, Des Moines, Federal Way, Maple Valley, Newcastle, Renton, SeaTac, Sumner and Tukwila.
