An elementary school age child stared a fire that heavily damaged a Kent mobile home and displaced eight people early Friday morning, the Kent Fire Department reported.

The child used a lighter to ignite a baby-wipe, then dropped the burning material into other combustibles, a Kent Fire investigator determined.

The fire was first reported at 7:33 a.m. as smoke coming from a bedroom in the 2440 block of 64 Avenue South.

The first fire unit in the area quickly upgraded the call to a house fire response when they saw a smoke column from several blocks away.

Firefighters from the Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority and South King Fire and Rescue were able to control the fire quickly.

All three adults and five children were able to escape safely. All the occupants were checked out by King County paramedics for smoke inhalation and none needed further medical care.Red Cross has been requested to assist the family.

The Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority operates a Juvenile Fire Stopper program, which educates kids on the dangers of using, experimenting or playing with fire.

Professional counseling is also available for those children needing more than simple education. Juveniles can be sent through the program at the request of parents or fire investigators, or by court order.
