A 35-year-old Tacoma man fishing in the Green River Wednesday evening lost his footing and was swept away by the current. He is presumed drowned, despite efforts by other fisherman to rescue him, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. near the 11200 block of the Auburn-Black Diamond Road off Highway 18.

The man waded across the river with a friend. The water was almost waist deep and when the man lost his footing and his hip-waders started to fill with water, according to a Sheriff’s Office media release.

Several people tried to rescue him by reaching out with their fishing poles, and at least one person jumped in after him. But the current was too swift and the man was swept away.

The man was last seen as he floated into a log jam down river. He has not been found and the Sheriff’s Office marine unit will mount a recovery operation Thursday.

Crews from Valley Regional Fire Authority and King Count Fire District 44/Black Diamond responded to the incident.
