Kentridge High girls basketball coach Mark Champoux recently stepped down from his post after four years with the program.

For Champoux, whose wife is expecting a baby girl in May, the reason to step down was clear — family trumps basketball. The former Kentridge coach has already has two children at home, ages 3 and 12.

“I know that’s where my head will be and that’s not fair on the kids (playing basketball),” admitted Champoux, who noted that his mom passed away before the basketball season, something that also impacted his decision. “I just don’t want to miss anything.”

Champoux, who also coaches golf and junior varsity baseball at Kentridge, will remain at the school. The time required of a basketball coach simply took away too much time from the family. In four years, Champoux posted a 19-61 overall record, including a 1-19 mark this winter.

“Like I told my kids at the banquet, there are more ways to measure success than by wins,” he said. “We didn’t have much experience coming back (this year). My kids played hard and I am proud of them. They never quit working hard throughout the whole year. They have a lot to look forward to and a lot to be proud of.”

Coaching basketball again doesn’t remain out of the realm of possibilities, Champoux said.

“I’m sure I will get that itch again,” he said. “I didn’t close any doors.”
