Kentwood’s Cheryl Havener recently was recognized as the 2013 Northwest Sectional Girls Golf Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Associations.

Havener’s Conquerors took the South Puget Sound League North Division title, captured the league championship and finished second in the 4A tournament during the season. Ravae Canas, Jamie Huo, Stephanie Cogswell and Catherina Li led Kentwood to the highest state finish under Havener.

“I was totally thrilled by it, but I also know it’s due to the girls who did well,” Havener said. “The girls were fabulous. I enjoyed working with them. They have so much energy and zest for life.”

In addition, the Washington State Golf Coaches Association selected Havener as the state 4A Girls Golf Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

Kentwood finished a sixth consecutive season undefeated in the SPSL North last fall. The Conks went on to win the league tournament Oct. 17. The Kentwood girls have won the league tournament five of the past six years.

Havener enters her eighth season with the Conks this fall.
