The women’s Lingerie Football League, which includes the Kent-based Seattle Mist, announced Thursday that five Canadian cities will join Toronto next year for the inaugural season of LFL Canada.

The new markets include Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Quebec City and Montreal, according to a LFL media release from its Las Vegas offices. The league will start in the fall of 2012. Toronto is playing this season with teams in the United States.

“As much success as the league has seen through its first two seasons in the U.S., we expect greater success in Canada due to its fanaticism around sports,” said Mitchell S. Mortaza, LFL founder and chairman.

Mortaza plans to expand the LFL into Australia in 2013 and Europe in 2014.

The U.S. league, which started in 2009, features 12 teams, including expansion teams in Las Vegas, Cleveland, Toronto, Minneapolis and Green Bay. The league signed a national television deal with MTV2 in 2010. Games are televised at 10 p.m. Friday. The season runs from August through January.

Seattle plays home games at the ShoWare Center in Kent. The Mist opens the season Sept. 30 at the Green Bay Chill.

The league features scantily clad women playing seven-on-seven tackle football on a 50-yard field. They play 17-minute halves. Each offense features a quarterback, center, two running backs and three receivers. There is no punting or field goals. Teams must throw at least two passes every four downs.

The players wear helmets with clear face shields, shoulder pads, sports bras, tight shorts, elbow and knee pads.
