King County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 29-year-old Covington man for investigation of first-degree robbery after he reportedly crashed his car at a high rate of speed and then attempted a carjacking at about 11:30 a.m. Nov. 22 in the Panther Lake area.

The man allegedly brandished a silver handgun as he approached two women near their cars outside of a home in the 12000 block of Southeast 210th Street, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The man pointed a gun at the first woman and said, “Give me your car.” The woman told him the car wouldn’t start because of a bad battery. The second woman came outside of her home to help the first woman jump-start her car.

The armed man ran over to the second woman and demanded that she get out of her car. The woman took the keys as she exited the car, ran into her house, locked the door and called 911.

It wasn’t until the man got into the woman’s car that he realized she had taken the keys. The man then fled on foot.

With help from residents who called 911, deputies found the man walking along Southeast 212th Place near 116th Avenue Southeast.

Before the attempted carjacking, a deputy spotted a black Dodge Magnum (a full-size station wagon) at about 11:30 a.m. traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on 124th Avenue Southeast near Southeast 196th Street. The deputy estimated the speed of the car at 80 mph or faster. The deputy flashed his lights at the car, but the driver kept going.

The Magnum collided down the road with another car that was legally in the intersection at 124th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 208th Street, according to the sheriff’s report.

Two of the three people in that car sustained injuries, but they weren’t life-threatening. They were treated and released at Valley Medical Center in Renton.

After the collision, the Magnum crashed through a fence and landed on a stump in the front yard of a home in the 12300 block of Southeast 209th Street.

Residents saw the driver, who was alone in the car, run from the Magnum carrying a handgun. As deputies searched for the man, he ran through a couple of back yards before he tried the attempted carjacking.

Deputies were unable to find the gun that residents had seen in the man’s hand.
