Glenn Walrond doesn’t exactly consider himself a superstitious person.

Because if last season is any indication, the Kentridge High boys soccer team could be in for a wild ride this season.

Sure, on the surface Kentridge’s 2008 campaign seems fine enough. The Chargers came within two points of making the South Puget Sound League playoffs and finished above .500. What stands out, however, is the number six, which is the amount of ties that went in the books for the Chargers last season.

Walrond, now in his 12th season with the team, has seen that many ties in a season just twice before.

But the last time …

“We won the division the next year,” said Walrond. “I talked to all those kids, all those ties could have been losses …but they also could have been wins. That extra push in a game could do it. We’ve been trying to harp on effort and intensity all spring.”

Though they aren’t the favorites to win the North Division title this season, the Chargers certainly have enough talent to nab one of the four allotted playoff berths. Much of that lies in a stellar group of returning starters, led by junior forward Scott Geffre, a first-team all-leaguer last year. Also back in the mix are starters Alex Ferguson (goalkeeper), Paul Bascole (defender), Greg Sever (midfielder), Sean Dunn (midfielder), Sam Piehler (midfielder/forward) and David Cahoon (defender).

“The league is pretty wide open,” Waldron said. “(But) I’d put us in the top four.”
