As a part of Green River College’s 50th anniversary celebration, the campus community gathered Thursday to look back on the college’s past.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Ridwan Ibrahim, Green River’s Associated Student Body president, opened a time capsule from the college’s 25th anniversary, the 1990-1991 school year. The capsule contained a video tape (which student government officials planned to watch later); copies of the college’s student newspaper, The Current; a faculty directory, which included instructors who still work at the college; a course list and a cafeteria menu with the most expensive item costing less than $3.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The contents of the time capsule will be on display in the Student Life office for a few weeks. Students plan to put the artifacts, along with items to mark the 50th anniversary, in a new time capsule set to be opened for the college’s 100th anniversary.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
College President Eileen Ely and Mel Lindbloom, the college’s first president, assisted two U.S. Marines in a flag presentation on Thursday. The flag was hoisted up the college’s first flagpole – which was relocated to the entrance to the Mel Lindbloom Student Union that opened in February on the main campus in Auburn.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Following the event, the college hosted its eighth annual challenge coin ceremony, which honors veterans, who attend or work at the college. Each veteran received a challenge coin, which is a military tradition. This year’s coin was specially designed for the college’s 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
