The Seattle Thunderbirds signed defenseman Jake Lee to a WHL standard player agreement, general manager Russ Farwell announced Wednesday.

“I met the coaching staff at the spring camp the team held in Calgary last week. It was a good experience,” Lee said. “I am 100 percent committed to the T-Birds and understand the hard work and commitment it will take to develop as a player.

“I am ecstatic to join the T-Birds.”

“We are very happy to have Jake committed to our team with his signing. Jake has a real presence on the ice and we are confident he will develop into a top defenseman with our team for years to come,” Farwell said.

Lee, who is from Sherwood Park, Alberta, was the T-Birds’ first-round selection, 18th overall, in the 2016 Bantam Draft. Lee played for the Sherwood Park Flyers Bantam AAA team this past season. He had 11 goals and 16 assists with 28 penalty minutes in 32 games. Lee just took part in the T-Birds Spring Prospect Camp in Calgary.

By signing a contract, Lee is guaranteed a WHL scholarship for every year he plays in the league. A player is able to attend any career enhancing institution of his choice, including universities, colleges, technical institutes, trade schools, or any other institution that will help the player achieve his academic and career goals. For each season played in the WHL, a player receives a one-year post-secondary scholarship, which includes tuition, compulsory fees and required textbooks.

T-Birds season tickets for the 2016-17 season are on sale. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
