King County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a man for investigation of resisting arrest and obstructing an officer after an incident Thursday morning, Dec. 12 at Northwood Middle School in the Kent School District.

The incident caused a lockdown at the school.

Deputies responded just before 10 a.m. to reports of a person with a weapon, according to a Dec. 12 email from Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brandyn Hull. The call was eventually updated to a call that a man was trying to gain access to the school.

“He was confronted by school security, acted erratic, threw pine cones and possibly exposed himself,” Hull said. “When contacted by police he tried to flee and resisted arrest.”

Deputies took the man into custody and transported him to a hospital for evaluation, Hull said. The case has been forwarded to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office with recommended charges of resisting arrest and obstruction.

According to a Northwood staff email to the school community, the lockdown was lifted at about 10:43 a.m.

“There was suspicious activity outside of our school,” according to staff. “Out of precaution, our Safety Services team decided it best to go into lockdown. …It has been lifted and all students and staff are safe.”

Northwood Middle School is at 17007 SE 184th St. The school is in unincorporated King County, but has a Renton address and is part of the Kent School District.
