24 chihuahua dogs were saved from a Renton home that was being served with an eviction notice.

The Renton Police Department reported on Facebook that on Dec. 5, officers responded to a request from the King County Sheriff’s Office, whose deputies were attempting to evict a resident on the 2800 block of NE 8th St. The deputies reported more than 20 dogs in the residence, later found to be 24 chihuahuas.

The post said the dogs were filthy, and some appeared to be unhealthy and injured. Renton Animal Control then transported the dogs to a veterinary clinic for care. The post added that the owner has 72 hours to file a claim, and if he doesn’t, the dogs will be available for adoption once they are medically cleared.

According to RPD spokesperson Meeghan Black, if the owner wanted to get the dogs back there are conditions, including paying the vet bills, which he has not been able to do. Additionally, Black said he would be charged with animal cruelty on Dec. 11.

Black said the animal control officer reported that fecal matter covered the entire inside of the residence, the dogs were covered in feces, some appeared blind, some were limping, and there was no water or food available.
