The Kent Reporter athletes of the week for the week of Dec. 13 are from Kentridge; Genesis Miller (Jr.) flag football, Giovanni Moimoi (Jr.) basketball.

What do you value in your sport or about your team?

Miller: I value teamwork and trust, being on the same page as your teammates and coaches is super important to be successful.

Moimoi: In basketball, I value the fast paced action and the constant challenge to improve my skills.

What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?

Miller: Something that I have learned growing up playing sports is tat relationships you build with your teammates are some of the best. It’s not always easy but being able to create that bond and work through rough patches together is something you can use throughout all stages of your life.

Moimoi: Basketball has taught me about perseverance and overcoming challenges like tough shots not falling or hard losses, but overcoming that to become a better player, person, and team.

What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?

Miller: As an athlete there will be times when you are unmotivated but something that helps me is taking a step into the future and turn into what I want ad it can fell overwhelming. But maintaining small habits one day at a time isn’t as overwhelming and will result in serous improvement.

Moimoi: Somethings that keeps me motivated is my family, they are my pride and joy and I want to make them proud and happy. Along with setting myself up for a successful future.

Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Miller: Bagel sandwich with eggs and bacon.

Moimoi: Steak and Mashed Potatoes.

What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?

Miller: A teammate input ad advice can be very valuable especially if you are the type of teammate that is encouraging, understanding and being someone that is open and approachable. Traits like that can go a long ways and make your advice a lot more cherished. Letting a teammate know that what they are struggling with is only temporary and that they are highly capable of overcoming their problems can help a lot.

Moimoi : I would say focus on what you can control. You can control your effort, attitude, and execution. Do not get down on the results

From the sidelines:

Miller: Genesis is an outstanding athlete and a leader on the KR flag football team. She leads by example and is very courteous to her teammates. Within just a few moments of being around her it is easy to see how infectious and upbeat personality boosts the team’s morale. During this weeks jamboree, Genesis demonstrated why she is a strong candidate for player of the year. She scored two long touchdown runs, three a touchdown pass and had multiple interceptions on defense.

Moimoi: Gio has started the season on a high note averaging 20 PPG, 8 RPG, 2 APG, and 2 BPG through our first 2 games, but it has been his leadership that is helping shape the Chargers to reach our full potential. He is a kid that wants to be challenged and held accountable because he knows it will only make him a better player and person. I am very proud of his development on and off the court these last two years of coaching him.
