Trista Helvey will soon join Kent Youth and Family Services (KYFS) as its new executive director, according to the Board of Directors.

Helvey, who was born and raised in Western Washington, joins KYFS after serving over a decade with YMCA of Greater Seattle. She served most recently as executive director of Matt Griffin YMCA in SeaTac and previously worked as a YMCA of Greater Seattle district director.

Helvey brings invaluable skills to shepherd KYFS forward in a period of growth, according to a board statement. The agency has increased the number of clients served annually by approximately 1,000 individuals in the past three years. Helvey demonstrates a deep knowledge and commitment to South King County and the needs of our community’s youth and families.

“Trista has a proven track record of working with communities to support those in need and improve the lives of others,” said Brian Smith, KYFS Board president. “Her high-energy style, strong relationship building abilities, and robust execution capabilities will be essential in reinforcing our mission and continued growth. I am confident that with Trista at the helm, we will successfully navigate today’s challenges and push forward with our vision of helping youth and families achieve their goals.”

Helvey will start her new position Nov. 1. She will be introduced by the board to the community and KYFS partners in the coming months. Helvey will replace interim executive director Sue Camou Arrant, who has been in the role since longtime executive director Mike Heinisch retired in 2021 after 21 years on the job. Arrant is a member of LPA (Leadership Planning Advancement) consulting, which helps with leadership transition and change management.

The mission of KYFS is to promote healthy development of children, youth and families in South King County by providing professional counseling, education and support services.
