On the first day of October, Kentwood junior Diya Thomas broke the school record for most goals in a single game.

Kentwood defeated the Auburn Trojans by a score of 8-1 on Oct. 1, and in that game, Diya Thomas did something spectacular. She scored six goals for the Conks, breaking Chelsi Pennington’s record from back in 2007.

“It feels really good to break the school record because my teammates put me in a great position to find the back of the net,” said Thomas in a statement to the Kent Reporter.

What is almost more remarkable was Thomas only had one goal in the first half, while Kentwood’s Tori Loso and Alyssa Cromwell also had one goal with Kentwood leading 3-0 at the halfway mark.

“Having only one goal in the first half, I wasn’t thinking about breaking a record. But once I got to four goals, I thought it could be possible, and the encouragement from my teammates really helped,” Thomas said.

Thomas went on a frenzy in the second half, scoring five over the 40-minute period — that’s one goal every eight minutes.

“The entire team from the defense to midfielders did a great job of getting me opportunities to score,” Thomas said.

Kentwood had struggled as of late, losing their last two games before the win over Auburn. Granted they were the two best teams in the NPSL. Kentwood is back to work Thursday, Oct. 3, against Mount Rainier before an all important dance with Kentridge on Oct. 8.
