What the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) calls a “monster weekend,” several parts of South King County’s interstates and state routes will be closed, primarily through Renton, Kent and the southern end of Federal Way.

WSDOT announced Monday that drivers traveling throughout South King County will be effected by closures on northbound Interstate 405 through Renton, southbound State Route 167 through Kent, and Interstate 5 from Federal Way to Fife, beginning late Friday night (Sept. 27).

Renton

Depending on weather, northbound I-405 will be closed from Sunset Boulevard Northeast/Southport Drive at Exit 5 to Coal Creek Parkway Southeast from 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, until 4 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.

Detours for northbound traffic will utilize Sunset Boulevard Northeast, Duvall Avenue Northeast and Coal Creek Parkway Southeast. Workers will shift the northbound traffic onto a new bridge during the closure.

Kent

Another weather-dependent closure, southbound SR 167 through Kent will begin at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, and end at 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30. A short distance, the closure goes from State Route 516 to South 277th Street, with detours marked for West Valley Highway North. These lanes will be closed for paving and striping.

Federal Way

Both directions of I-5 will be closed between SR 18 in Federal Way and 54th Avenue East in Fife so that workers can set girders for a new overpass.

There will be two overnight closures on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28. The northbound lanes will close at 10:30 p.m. while southbound lanes will close at 11 p.m. each night. The lanes will begin to reopen at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning and at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.
