The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently delivered 1,257 cases of food to distribute to four local organizations that feed people in need.

The organizations are the Kent Food Bank, the John Volken Academy in Kent, New Beginnings Christian Fellowship church in Kent and King of Kings Lutheran Church in Renton.

Ten volunteers helped to distribute the food June 13 from a truckload that arrived from Salt Lake City, Utah at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 18207 108th Ave. SE, which offers a weekly Saturday food bank.

The shipment contained useful basics such as milk, rice, pasta, tomatoes, peanut butter, canned fruit and dish soap.

“One of the biggest challenges of addressing food insecurity is making sure the food reaches those who need it most,” according to a press release from the Latter-day Saints. “Joining forces, these organizations seek to solve this challenge by connecting food donors, volunteers and those in need in simple and convenient ways.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints started a food canning and production program in the 1940s to provide food and jobs to people following the Great Depression, according to the press release. They partner with local churches and charities who largely use volunteers to distribute the food and household items to the community.
