May 30, 1930 – May 30, 2024

James Horace (Jim) Cantrell passed away on his 94th birthday May 30th, 2024. Jim was born in Seattle, WA on May 30.th, 1930 to Ector and Jeanette Cantrell. He was preceded in death by his parents and young son Jimmy. Jim is survived by Marilyn, his loving wife of 35 years. He is also survived by his three daughters, Vicki Maniglia (Karl), Michele Korsmo (David), and Carolyn Syberg (Torben), four grandchildren: Kirsten, Hailey, Kayla and Kolby. Jim is also survived by his stepsons Steve (Pam), Tom (Celesta), Dan (Annie), and David (Cathy) Carlson and their families.

Jim served in the United States Naval Reserve at Sand Point for two years, one year of active duty. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1954 and embarked on a career in education. He had a long career in teaching and administration in the Kent and Auburn school districts. His true love, however, was coaching and working with kids.

While he loved all sports, he was especially passionate about basketball. He maintained many long-standing relationships with students.

One of his biggest joys was spending time with his family. They enjoyed camping, boating, and water sports. Coaching his daughters in various sports was a highlight.

Marilyn and Jim spent 18 wonderful years living on the Columbia River. They traveled across the US twice in their motorhome taking in all this beautiful country has to offer. However, at the end of the day, Jim was most content to sit in the bleachers or stands watching his grandkids compete.

In memory of his son Jimmy, and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 3 International Drive, Suite 200, Rye Brook, NY 10573. www.mygiving.lls.org.
