Investigators have ruled the large self-storage fire in Kent to be an accidental fire that was not intentionally set.

Firefighters from the Renton Regional Fire Authority and Puget Sound Fire — which serves Kent, Covington, Maple Valley, SeaTac and Tukwila — responded to the fire at Valley Self Storage on 84th Avenue at 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 2.

The fire generated a response of over 60 firefighters from Kent and Renton. One person received non-life threatening injuries at the scene of the fire and was transported to a local hospital as multiple fire trucks arrived.

Support staff, King County Medic One and others were present at the scene to take on the fire, according to spokesperson Pat Pawlak of Puget Sound Fire.

To keep the fire from spreading, firefighters were able to do a horizontal strip cut on the roof. The fire was under control within an hour and ended up causing damage, either by flames or smoke, to “an excess of 20 units” in the self-storage buildings, Pawlak said.

While the fire has been ruled accidental, the exact cause is still under investigation.
