Authorities responded to an airplane crash that occurred Jan. 16 in Auburn that left a single occupant with minor injuries.

Auburn Police Department spokesperson Kolby Crossley said that responders were dispatched to the 3900 block of Auburn Way N. around 11:30 a.m., where a small plane had crashed into a chainlink fence adjacent to the roadway.

Washington State Patrol and Valley Regional Fire also responded at the scene where a single occupant, the pilot of the small plane, was reportedly taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Crossley said the pilot was conscious and aware when responders arrived and that no businesses or bystanders were damaged or injured in the accident.

According to Crossley, the pilot of the plane reported taking off from Auburn Municipal Airport before the plane “lost power” mid-flight. The pilot told police he tried to turn the plane around to make an emergency landing at Auburn Municipal Airport, but crashed on the side of the road.

The scene and investigation will be turned over to the National Transportation Security Board, which investigates plane accidents.

Crossley said Auburn Way will be temporarily closed between 37th Street to 42nd Street NE to secure the scene of the crash.
