The Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds will play the Portland Winterhawks in a Western Hockey League (WHL) game on Sunday, March 17 at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

The T-Birds, who play home games at the city-owned accesso ShoWare Center, announced the game in a Dec. 17 media release. Puck drop is at 5:05 p.m. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20 at ticketmaster.com. Prices are $60, $50, $40 and $25.

This will mark the third Battle on the Sound Game for the T-Birds at Climate Pledge Arena, home of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken.

“We are extremely privileged to host the 3rd annual Battle on the Sound against our I-5 rival the Portland Winterhawks at Climate Pledge Arena,” said T-Birds President Colin Campbell. “The support we receive from Tod Leiweke and the entire Kraken organization is tremendous and it all helps to continue to grow the game of hockey in the region.”

Climate Pledge Arena is a special place for the Thunderbirds, who first played under the roof when it was the Seattle Center Coliseum on Oct. 7, 1989. The team moved to Kent in 2009.

“We’re excited to have the great fans of the Seattle Thunderbirds back in our building for the third time,” said Steve Mattson, Climate Pledge Arena executive vice president and general manager. “As the hockey community grows in the Puget Sound, this game is an integral part of showcasing the sport.”

The arena is expected to be a thrill for players and fans.

“It is a great opportunity for our guys to play at the Climate Pledge Arena,” said Jared Crooks, T-Birds assistant general manager. “Our team has many young players that haven’t had this experience yet, and I know they will be really looking forward to the game. Playing against our rivals from Portland will bring additional energy to the event.”

The T-Birds enter this week ninth in the WHL Western Conference with a record of 12-15-2-0 and 26 points. Portland is fourth at 20-10-1-1 and 42 points. The Prince George Cougars lead the conference followed by the Wenatchee Wild and Everett Silvertips.

Seattle’s next three games at the ShoWare Center are 6:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30 against Everett; 7:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5 game against Prince George; and 7:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12 against Portland.
