The city of Kent’s Land Use and Planning Board will discuss zoning regulations related to the production, processing and retail sale of recreational marijuana at a workshop at 7 p.m. Monday, May 12 in Council Chambers at City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S.

The workshop is open to the public but no public testimony will be taken. A public hearing will be scheduled for later in the process as city officials try to figure out whether to allow marijuana businesses in Kent.

Kent has a six-month ban on marijuana businesses that expires Nov. 27. The state Liquor Control Board plans to allow the first retail stores to open in July, but the stores are banned in Kent.

Board members at the workshop will discuss with city staff how Kent should address and establish zoning regulations for recreational marijuana businesses or whether the city should continue to ban such businesses.

Voters approved Initiative 502 in 2012 to legalize the use of recreational marijuana and to set up businesses for producing, processing and selling it.
