The South 228th Street improvement project got the green light Tuesday at the Kent City Council meeting.

The project will involve installing storm water pipe along South 228th Street between the Union Pacific railroad and 64th Avenue South. It is expected the work will take about three months and be completed by November.

The Council unanimously approved the staff recommendation awarding the contract to the Kirkland firm MidMountain Contractors.

According to city documents, the project will help alleviate flooding from Mill Creek along 76th Avenue South. A water main will also be replaced along South 228th.

The city received nine bids with MidMountain coming in at the lowest with about $5.2 million. The highest bid came from James Fowler Co. at $7.1 million.

The city engineer’s estimate was $6.4 million.

The project is being funded from the city’s storm drainage and water utility funds.

During construction there will be some traffic revisions while the pipe is being installed.
