Kent Police arrested a 33-year-old Kent man for investigation of second-degree assault after a nearly four-hour standoff at an East Hill apartment.

Officers responded at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 20 to an address (which police did not release) in regards to reports of a domestic violence assault in progress, according to a June 20 Kent Police statement. Officers arrived and spoke with a woman who said that a small child was still inside the apartment with the suspect.

Officers spoke to the suspect for over an hour to encourage him to safely exit the residence, but he refused, according to police. The man barricaded the door. Officers called out the Valley SWAT Team and hostage negotiators to assist. Officers stayed with the woman to provide support and gather evidence.

SWAT provided security, kept the neighborhood safe and kept the suspect from escaping, according to police. Hostage negotiators eventually convinced the man to leave the apartment just after 4 a.m. The child was not injured.
